IAA Fee Questions

How much are IAA fees on a $2,000 car?

On a $2,000 sale price won by proxy bid, expect roughly $775 in fees: a $535 buyer fee, a $100 proxy bid fee, the $105 service fee, a $15 environmental fee, and a $20 title-handling fee — about $2,775 out the door before taxes and shipping. Win it in the live online auction and it's about $785.

Does IAA charge a gate fee?

Not by that name. IAA charges a $105 service fee on every unit, which covers vehicle handling including imaging, pull-out, and loading — it's IAA's equivalent of a gate fee. Older references to a $95 gate fee or $79 service fee are out of date.

Can the public buy at IAA without a dealer license?

In many states, yes — but registration costs $225 per year for a public (individual) buyer account, and public bidding eligibility varies by state. Public buyers pay the same fee schedule as standard-volume licensed buyers. No security deposit is required to bid, unlike Copart.

What is IAA's renege fee if I don't pay?

Failing to pay within 7 calendar days of the award costs $1,000 or 15% of the sale price — whichever is greater — plus collection costs, and your bidding is suspended until it's paid. A second renege can permanently revoke your account.

When is payment due at IAA, and how can I pay?

Payment is generally due within 3 business days, with late fees and storage rates set by each branch. Wire transfers have no limit; credit and debit cards are capped at $2,500 per day for public buyers ($20,000 for licensed); cash is limited to $500 per day in person. Money orders and traveler's checks haven't been accepted since July 2025.

Are IAA fees higher than Copart fees?

They're close — IAA's standard buyer-fee table actually matches Copart's salvage-title secured table bracket for bracket. The difference comes from the extras: IAA adds a $105 service fee plus a $20 title-handling fee on every unit, while Copart's gate fee is $79 to $95 but adds a virtual bid fee that varies by title type. On cheap cars either way, fees can add 40% to 80% on top of your bid.
